2016 has been a year of development for the Animation department here at SVAD. This semester, the lab known as the “2D Lab” has been upgraded with 15 new Wacom Cintiq 22HD DTK2200 tablets, each powered by their own desktop workstation. The Cintiqs double as both digital drawing surfaces as well as traditional pc/monitor workstations, increasing the number of students who can simultaneously work digitally. The tablets replaced most of the light drawing boards used for traditional, hand drawn 2D animation.
The new Cintiqs will give students the opportunity to express their ideas digitally without using any paper. The Cintiqs will be excellent when combined with programs such as Photoshop, Sketchbook, Storyboard Pro, ZBrush, and Mudbox. The workstations can also be utilized with many of the other programs routinely used in the conventional labs such as Maya, After Effects, and Unreal Engine. However, animation students won’t be the only ones to benefit from these new tablets. All art departments are free to use the Cintiqs for Graphic Design, Fine Art, and Film projects.
